Hand trimming Marijuana vs Machine Trimming Marijuana. Now I have seen this debate go down many-o-times. Some how the conversation always turns into a weird “chicken or the egg” discussion. The weed cannasuers start talking about the Tricombs and the cannaslangers always argue the checks and balances.

When my Dad first offered to let me come to his “trimming parties” I was so excited! I pictured the whole crew sitting around admiring the sugar frosted fruits of their labor while we all puff, puff passed the night away. That was real sweet, but was unfortunately not the case.

In reality, what I experienced was back breaking labor and for the first time I truly appreciated the words: “Commercial Agriculture”. Trimming is a complete undertaking, yet some how finding enough trustworthy people, with a shred of work ethic every three months was even a greater feat. Back then there was just not any other choice. Thankfully with the advancement in bud trimming technology the process is easier and more controlled.

Trimming can be a nightmare, but it dosen’t have to be. Invest in the right equipment, and machine trimming can definitely become the new gold standard!

Back in August 2015, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a measure that went into effect last month, one of many new Marijuana regulations under the Animal & Environmental banner. But this one measure sticks out like a sore thumb, one that is not tolerated by the state and has already shown their presence thru countless raids thru the Dept. of California Game & Wildlife. With numerous raids under their belt, this one particular measure allows steep civil fines against marijuana farms that damage the environment by dumping waste water and chemicals, removing trees and killing wild animals.

The measure, one of 16 bills signed by the governor, is meant to expand the powers of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife at a time when illegal marijuana operations are expanding significantly. This was introduced by Senator Monnin, since the measure was based on concern that since California voters approved medical marijuana use in 1996, the number of illegal growing operations in state parklands and forests has increased.

Investigators found more than 135 dams or diversions in rivers and streams that resulted in the theft of about 5 million gallons of water for marijuana grows. These practices already decimate California’s already historic drought conditions and severely affect Coho Salmon runs and other fishery populations.

the new law would provide for fines of up to $40,000 for illegally dumping many kinds of hazardous materials into rivers and streams, and fines up to $10,000 for removing trees or trapping and killing wildlife. Adding that it can cost up to $15,000 per acre to clean up and restore each acre damaged since fields are being bulldozed to level fields which are needed for the growth of Cannabis plants.

Last year, state agents participated in nearly 250 raids on illegal marijuana operations in which 609,480 marijuana plants were eradicated and 15,839 pounds of processed marijuana was seized. Wow! 16,000 pounds! imagine the crews of bud trimmers that were in line for that nice harvest, and the blisters that the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife team suffered thru the countless hours of shearing illegally potted plants with their own best bud trimmers. Only if they were able to get their hands on some sweet commercial bud trimmers, maybe some Dry/Wet weed trimmers, who cares right? Wait a minute, I think I need to make a phone call.

Many new and exciting cannabis products come on the market every day. Rosin seems to be the latest concentrate craze and it seems like many people don’t really know what to think of it yet. It’s a very, very simple process and seems to produce fantastic results when done right. Rosin is the name given to concentrates extracted with heat and compression. What this means for most people is a truly solventless concentrate. While I enjoy bubble as much as the next person that comes along, from a numbers standpoint in production it doesn’t yield well enough to be economical unless you happen to be VERY good at it. The average bag wash if done well will yield anywhere between 8-12% based on weight. Not very impressive when most oil runs can achieve upwards of 20-30%. Rosin presents a way to hit these higher production numbers, without using costly hydrocarbon or CO2 machines. All one really needs is a hair straightener, parchment paper, and bud. Bam! Homemade dabs. However done at home, the results will be nowhere near efficient, but the ease of production is there. Many companies offer special rosin presses and essentially they are all the same thing. A high heat manual or automatic press.

These machines concentrate a very high amount of pressure  and heat in a small area that compresses the buds and ‘squeezes’ out the sappy concentrate. Producing material that can be pressed can be a tough choice though. Whole nuggets can be pressed several times and can be done either wet or dry. Trim can also be presses but with larger smaller pieces that could be absorbed by the fresh concentrate, a lot of care has to be taken not to mix the two up, so a screen must be used. With a good screen system, even kief can be pressed out into very productive concentrate runs. Most bud trimmers don’t readily produce much kief to be spoken of and extracting it during the curing process can be costly and inefficient. With newer bud trim machines, such as the CenturionPro, the trim can be separated into products that will better run through a rosin machine. WIth their 2 bag system, the inner 200 micron bag catches all larger trim that can be pressed with mild difficulty. However the material in the outer bag, the finer grade kief, can very easily be immediately pressed for concentrate, making fresh potent concentrate at the same time as harvest, which can help mitigate costs and create a more even cash flow based on weight produced. Oil and Hash have a dark horse in their rear view, and its name is Rosin.
